KALARIPPAYATTU-INDIAN MARTIAL ARTS:

Kalarippayattu is an ancient Indian martial art that has cross pollinated over the centuries with yoga and Ayurveda, as well as Kathakali, a traditional theater dance. It teaches the practioner in body and mind to "be "present in absence", meaning complete readiness for anything that arises in the moment.  It can be a powerful tool for modern life; to remain focused, relaxed and aware withing the cacophony of the everday field.

Dancer/choreographer Oguri is one of the foremost exponents of the contemporary dance movement known as Butoh. Trained in Japan, his career began in 1984. He has been based in Los Angeles since 1991 and has been offering classes entitled Body Weather Laboratory (BWL). BWL strengthens the growth and understanding of Butoh, which utilizes in-depth study of nature as source material for dance. BWL has been in residence at the Electric Lodge in Venice since 1997 and supported in part by OGP since 1999. In 1993 BWL formed a dance company and has conducted workshops and residencies.BWL tours and performs locally and internationally.

Move & Groove is a fun, adventurous, high energy dance class. The warm-up includes body isolation exercises to develop coordination and inspired footwork to become quick on your feet. We then focus on evolving sequences across the floor and exploring unique expression. The choreography is a stylized combination of jazz, samba and structured improvisation.

Rebecka Furtado and Arti Panjwani Kvam are 200-500 hour yoga certified teachers that love to teach beginning yoga in a Hatha Flow, Yin, Restorative mix that is customized for each class. Both have been working with the Venice Family Clinic for over a year providing community classes that are easy to join and non intimidating, while maintaining a constant benefit and challenge to the seasoned student. Both are very dedicated to serving the community at large and helping those who would not normally have access to classes. This class is all levels and free to the community. Please bring a mat, block and straps if you have them, we have some mats and blocks to use if needed.

INT/ADV MODERN DANCE CLASS with Collective Movement:

Fridays 11:30am-1:30pm

Instructor: Alexandria Yalj

(Part I - Foundation) Basis focusing on alignment, core strength, breath, and exploration of gravity. Alexandria has successfully Incorporated ideas from her own training of Limon, Horton, Cunningham, Graham, and Simonson techniques and culminated them with her own fresh energetic flavor and musicality to create exciting warm up. These "dances" promote physicality, stamina and agility enhancing performance quality awareness and execution.

(Part II- Research) Combining improvisation and the dynamic choreography of Alexandria Yalj, this improvisational lab has been specifically developed for investigation and experimenting with time, space, effort, and shape. Offering an array of improvisational vignettes where participants are presented with playground of compositional images to play with and exercise their creative mind paired with body and soul.

Alexandria Yalj -self producing performance artist with an MFA in choreography from CalArts. If she is not chasing the sun regardless of direction, she's probably diligently coordinating the next Collective Movement. As artistic director of Collective Movement, Alexandria has had the extreme pleasure in forming a pick up dance company that embodies an organically radical approach to choreography. Her unique choreographic works haven been presented in her native New York City as well as New Hampshire, Fresno City College, Pepperdine University, Berkshire Fringe Festival and here in Los Angeles. A current company member of Rosanna Gamson/World Wide, Alexandria is constantly searching for new approaches to expression and communication capacity of the body.
